Finished your yoga teacher training? Congratulations — but you're only halfway to becoming an official Registered Yoga Teacher.
Many new graduates assume their training certificate alone qualifies them to teach professionally. In reality, Yoga Alliance registration is a separate process that has to be completed on their platform before you can legally use the RYT title. This guide breaks down exactly how to register as an RYT 200 or RYT 500, step by step, so you can move from "certified" to "credentialed" without confusion or delay.
At Raj Yoga Rishikesh, we personally walk every graduate through this process — but here's the complete guide so you know exactly what to expect.
What's in this Guide:
What Is Yoga Alliance and Why Register?
Yoga Alliance is a voluntary, US-based registry that sets educational and ethical standards for yoga teachers and yoga schools around the world. Registration isn't legally required to teach, but it has become an informal industry standard.
- Professional credibility: Registration confirms your training met a recognized hour and curriculum benchmark.
- Global visibility: Your name is listed on Yoga Alliance's public teacher directory, where students and studios search for credentialed instructors.
- Employment access: Many studios, gyms, resorts, and wellness centers internationally require or prefer an active RYT credential before hiring.
RYT 200 vs. RYT 500: What's the Difference?
RYT 200 is the foundational, entry-level credential. It's earned after completing a 200-hour teacher training at a school registered with Yoga Alliance as an RYS 200 — covering asana, pranayama, anatomy, philosophy, teaching methodology, and ethics. This is where nearly every new teacher starts.
RYT 500 reflects 500 cumulative hours of registered training. There are two paths to reach it:
- Complete one continuous 500-hour training at an RYS 500, or
- Complete a 200-hour training, then a separate 300-hour training at an RYS 300 (same school or different)
Important: training hours generally can't be pieced together from several short, unrelated workshops. Each tier — 200-hour, 300-hour, or 500-hour — must be completed in full with a single registered school to count toward your application.
Step-by-Step: How to Register with Yoga Alliance
This walkthrough follows Yoga Alliance's own Registered Yoga Teacher Application Guide, so you can follow along exactly as the dashboard is laid out.
Step 1: Create Your Account and Access the Teacher Dashboard
- Go to yogaalliance.org and select "Join" in the top right corner
- Follow the prompts to create your account and submit your contact information
- Once logged in, select "Basic Dashboard" at the top right corner of the page
- Scroll down, and under "How Would You Describe Yourself?" select the "Teacher" tab
- Under "What credential would you like to apply for?" choose your designation — RYT 200 or RYT 500 — and click "Select"
Step 2: Submit Your Program Confirmation Request
- Enter your training Start Date and exact End Date — the end date must match the date on your certificate
- Enter the name of your RYS and click "Search", then click "Select" next to the correct result
- Upload a digital version of your certificate by clicking "Browse for File"
- Once your file uploads, click "Send Request"
- If your credential requires teaching hours (all designations except RYT 200), scroll down and select "Teaching Hours" to log them
Step 3: Wait for School Confirmation
Your Registered Yoga School will receive a notification and must confirm your completed training. This verification can take up to 14 days.
Step 4: Pay the Registration and Membership Fee
Once you receive the confirmation email, log back into your Yoga Alliance account, select the "Teacher" tab, and complete the registration and membership payment (see the cost table below).
Not ready to pay yet? That's fine — your training confirmation stays saved on your account. Yoga Alliance fee is only required if you want to be listed in their official directory and use the RYT registry mark.
Step 5: Leave Your School a Review
After payment, you'll be prompted to complete a short School Review Survey — rating your training program and leaving general comments. This is the final step that completes your registration. Note that responses are not anonymous and cannot be edited or removed once submitted.
You're Officially Registered
Your RYT credential goes live and appears on Yoga Alliance's public directory — you can now use your designation professionally.
Registration Costs & Timeline
Here's the official first-year cost breakdown, straight from Yoga Alliance's Application Guide:
| Registration Fees & Membership Dues | Amount |
|---|---|
| Application Fee (one-time, non-refundable) | $50 |
| Membership Dues (annual) | $65 |
| 1st Year Total | $115 |
- Renewal: $65 per year to keep your credential active
- Upgrading from RYT 200 to RYT 500: a one-time $50 upgrade fee after completing your additional 300-hour training
- Experienced Teacher Pathway application fee: $85 (non-refundable), bringing the total first-year cost to $150 for that pathway
- Total processing time: typically 2–3 weeks from submission to approval, depending on school confirmation speed and application volume
A note on pricing: Fees above are correct as of August 2026 and sourced directly from Yoga Alliance's official Application Guide. Yoga Alliance can update pricing at any time, so please confirm the current rate on the official Yoga Alliance website before you pay.
Also watch for lookalike sites such as "Yoga Alliance International" or "Yoga Alliance European Registry" — these are separate organizations with their own (often higher) fee structures. The only registry that grants the RYT credential referenced in this guide is yogaalliance.org.
Common Mistakes That Delay Registration
- Name mismatches between your ID, certificate, and application
- Approximate (rather than exact) training dates
- Selecting the wrong RYS level (200 vs. 300 vs. 500) for your school
- Letting membership lapse — once inactive, you can't publicly use the RYT title until you renew
How to Log Continuing Education (YACEP) Hours
The first option for entering training hours is applicable if you completed the course through a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP). If you are not sure if your provider holds the YACEP credential, you can contact them to confirm, or try the steps below.
- Go to yogaalliance.org and log into your account.
- Click "Teacher Dashboard" at the top right. On your dashboard menu on the left, select "My Training Hours."
- Under "Add Training Hours," select “Taught by a YACEP."
- Follow the prompts to upload your certificate.
- Enter your course start and end dates.
- Under "Find Your YACEP," enter the name of the YACEP. The YACEP is the individual instructor rather than the name of the school.
- If your YACEP has listed the course with the exact start/end dates you entered, it will appear in the search results. Select your course and send request. Once the request is sent, your YACEP will confirm the request. If the request isn’t confirmed within 10 days, kindly reach out to your YACEP.
- Having trouble finding your course? If your instructor has not provided a certificate, listed this exact course, or if it was on-demand, you will need to manually enter it. Select "Enter Course Manually" and follow the prompts to manually enter your course without a certificate. Then assert that the information you entered is true and select "save."
Registering with Yoga Alliance, Step by Step
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to register with Yoga Alliance to teach yoga?+
No. Registration is voluntary, not a legal requirement. However, many studios, gyms, and international wellness employers prefer or require it, so most professional teachers choose to register.
Can I combine multiple short courses to reach 200 or 500 hours?+
No. Yoga Alliance generally requires each training tier to be completed in full at a single registered school; multiple shorter, unrelated courses can't be combined.
How long does Yoga Alliance registration take?+
Typically 2–3 weeks total, including school verification time, though this can vary based on application volume.
Do I have to pay the fee as soon as I submit my training confirmation?+
No. Submitting your Program Confirmation Request only verifies your training with your school and doesn't require payment. You can complete that step first and pay later when you're ready to activate your RYT credential. Just note that your registration isn't finalized — and you won't appear in the Yoga Alliance directory or be able to use the RYT title — until payment is made.
Is my Raj Yoga Rishikesh certification globally recognized?+
Yes — training completed at a Yoga Alliance–registered school (RYS) is recognized internationally once you complete the registration steps above.
What happens if I don't renew my Yoga Alliance membership?+
Your RYT status becomes inactive, and you can no longer publicly use the RYT designation or appear in the teacher directory until you renew.
Do I have to complete continuing education to stay registered?+
Yes. All Registered Yoga Teachers must complete 75 hours of continuing education every three years — 45 hours of teaching yoga and 30 hours of training tied to one of Yoga Alliance's four Educational Categories.
